Working Together to

Secure Our Future

We have relied on others to protect us

Common thought is to trust and rely upon our government and political leaders to take care of us, to protect us, and to assist those caught in the eye of disaster. With the fall of the Twin Towers in Manhattan, and later in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, a greater sense of self-responsibility emerged in America. Our perception of safety and protection was changed forever. NOW common thought is that in an emergency don't call 911!

Many people are learning to become more self-reliant

and are GETTING PREPARED.

Building a safe shelter is no longer considered extreme or out-dated.

But it calls for decisive action

Many interesting questions emerged about sheltering with others at the Babes' Gathering events.  One of the first questions addressed was who do we prepare with and for how long? Over a summer of workshops in 2007 Babes in Belts found that many people were filled with uncertainty about how to contend with such a broad stroke of change in their lives. Not only out of financial considerations, but also because they had trepidations about what it would be like to come out of a shelter after a natural or man-made disaster. Would life, as we know it, be the same? Would anyone else be around?

Babes in Belts helped many find EACH OTHER

AND made the idea of building a safe shelter "doable".
