Universal Building Plans
Choosing a Shelter Design
When choosing building plans we have to ask ourselves, how would we want to live if an unforeseen disaster struck and we were forced inside for an indeterminable length of time? Do we want to live in a 10’ x 10’ concrete bunker or a 10’ x 20' metal tank? Can we be prepared in a comfortable environment with all the amenities that our military and government leaders have available when facing national emergencies like 911? Yes we can. We can build a safe shelter in the earth with many of the conveniences in your home – a hovel that is livable, safe and secured to protect you and your loved ones.
One goal of Babes In Belts is to continue to develop innovative designs
to accommodate every idea of safety when sheltering underground. We
have found that some people insist that having a domed structure is the
only safe way to build underground. Others have created hexagonal
structures with cone shaped roofs. Still others prefer a rectangle with
an arched or flat roof, as in the Babes Universal Building Plans. The placement of walls is equally varied. What we know
is that our state of mind in an emergency situation is of vital
importance. If an arched roof or a domed
sturcture is what makes you feel secure, then that is what you should build.
Comfort and Livability
Buying a set of shelter plans or drawing up your own is like imagining a dream home. Comfort and
livability does not have to be compromised. There are many products on
the Internet designed for temporary safety, as in a hurricane or
tornado shelter situation. Others are equipped with every kind of
filter and protective gadgetry needed when faced with a pandemic, nuclear
fallout or bio terrorism. Those threats are real for many, especially
those living in cities that are perfect targets for acts of war and
terrorism. But we believe the greater threat is coming more quickly and from Nature. Climate change is a symptom not a cause. We have created an imbalance in the biosphere and the Earth will shift to stabilize its natural resources once again.
Designed to Protect
We have designed our Universal Building Plans to act like a hollow rock in the earth. The floor and ceiling are engineered for 12 to 16 inches of concrete and the walls are a foot thick. The shelter can be covered with two feet of Earth. The combination of soil and thickness are equal to 4 feet of earth in gamma radiation protection.
Our plans are designed with addendums for spatial capacity, room for storage, a kitchen and water room, plenty of living and breathing space with the possibility of building on an addition if needed over time. The new construction plans for a house and basement shelter make having a safe shelter a very livable concept. It is conventionally built, and comes with the protection of a hidden, watertight security door. Our shelters are built using ICF construction.

What level of disaster are you building for?
It is important to understand what level of disaster is likely to occur in your area. Does your shelter need to withstand a 9-point earthquake or a 500-foot tsunami? How about a 300 mile an hour wind? Living on the coastlines, in river valleys and in certain parts of the world, like Mexico and Australia, may require even greater security than what we have designed into our plans. In some locations two-foot thick walls are recommended.
